Semarang, April 15, 2026 – The Department of Informatics, Faculty of Science and Mathematics (FSM), Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP), once again organized the UNDIP Global Classroom (UGC) as part of its commitment to the internationalization of education and the enhancement of globally oriented learning experiences. The UGC program is one of UNDIP’s flagship initiatives that integrates international academics and professionals into the teaching and learning process, providing students with broader perspectives through cross-border academic collaboration.
On this occasion, the UGC was conducted as part of the Big Data course, a 3-credit (3 SKS) subject attended by approximately 145 participants, including Informatics students and members of the academic community with a strong interest in data technologies and modern analytics.
The event was moderated by Satriyo Adhy, S.Si., M.T. and featured an international guest speaker, Farashazillah Yahya, Ph.D from Universiti Malaysia Sabah. During the guest lecture, she delivered a presentation entitled “Foundations and Applications of Big Data Analytics,” covering fundamental concepts, supporting technologies, and various practical implementations of Big Data Analytics across diverse industries and research domains.
In her presentation, Farashazillah Yahya, Ph.D explained that the rapid advancement of digital technologies has generated an unprecedented volume of data that continues to grow exponentially. Consequently, the ability to manage, process, and analyze data has become an essential skill in today’s era of digital transformation. Participants were introduced to the fundamental concepts of Big Data, including the well-known 5V characteristics—Volume, Velocity, Variety, Veracity, and Value—as well as the importance of analytical technologies in transforming raw data into meaningful insights for decision-making processes.
Beyond the theoretical foundations, the speaker also highlighted a variety of real-world applications of Big Data Analytics across sectors such as business, healthcare, education, government, and the Internet of Things (IoT). Through several case studies, participants gained valuable insights into how large-scale datasets can be transformed into strategic intelligence that supports operational efficiency, service innovation, and evidence-based policymaking. Big Data Analytics has increasingly become a key enabling technology for intelligent systems and data-driven decision-making in numerous fields.
The session was conducted in an interactive and engaging atmosphere. Direct interaction with an international academic provided participants with a valuable learning experience while broadening their understanding of current research trends and industry practices on a global scale. Through this activity, students not only developed a deeper understanding of the concepts and applications of Big Data Analytics but also gained international perspectives on emerging developments in data technologies.
The UNDIP Global Classroom is expected to further strengthen students’ competencies in addressing the challenges of the digital era and enhance their readiness to contribute to both academia and industry, where data-driven approaches are becoming increasingly essential.
The successful implementation of this UGC session within the Big Data course reflects the Department of Informatics FSM UNDIP’s ongoing commitment to providing innovative, collaborative, and globally competitive learning experiences. Through academic partnerships with international universities, students are given the opportunity to learn directly from world-class experts while expanding their academic and professional networks at the international level.
